Dichroic
glass is a fascinating high-tech material with which to
work. Dichroic literally means "two colors"-
the glass will reflect one color and transmit a second
color. When
fused, this glass offers an optical quality like no other-sparkling
and shifting among colors in the piece. Originally invented
for the space program, this glass acts as a substrate to
which metal oxides are deposited in a high tempature, vaccum
furnace.
The pendants are individually created by hand-cutting layers
of sheet glass. The layers are then stacked upon each other
and placed in a kiln, where they are fused to a temperature
of approximately 1450 degrees farenheit. After cooling, each
piece is hand-shaped on a grinder. Fired a second time to fire
polish and to anneal, the pieces regain their glossy finish
and are ready for attaching the bail. Each piece is signed
by the artist and each is a one of a kind.
